Each project is different and not everyone has the same comfort level with technology but here are a few tools that we might use during the design process.

Terminology

  • CMS means Content Management System, it’s the place where the content of your website lives. This could be Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, etc.

Most CMS tools require an annual subscription. This generally starts at $250 per year and increases depending on the number of pages, special functionality, booking and if you plan to sell products, services or courses.

  • The url you will use to direct traffic to your site: www.reavesprojects.com, www.amazon.com, etc.

This is an annual fee that you will be responsible for typically between $12-20 annually.

  • A staging site is a safe environment where we can play with ideas. It is separate from the live site.

Note: Depending on your CMS tool, this may be an added cost or feature.

  • A sitemap is an outline of the pages needed for your site. It’s also the roadmap Google will use when indexing your site.

  • Every website requires a host. For CMS tools like Squarespace and Wix, the service/fee is included in your annual subscription.

WordPress requires a separate hosting plan. For all WordPress sites, I recommend WP Engine. Plans start at $25 per month with an annual subscription.

  • Copy is the text used on your website. It can include an overview for your home page, bio for about and a description of services you provide. You should have copy available before hiring a designer. If you need help there are loads of excellent copywriters available on any and every subject.

  • Design assets are the individual elements used to build your site. A few common assets are: logo, fonts, copy and images.

  • A project scope document is the contract we might use if we work together. It outlines in detail our agreement of the scope of work and will include: number of pages, any special functionality, timelines and payment arrangements. Any work asked for outside of the scope document will need to be addressed separately and will increase the overall project cost.

Some projects work better on an hourly basis. For these, no project scope document might be used.

  • Launching means the new site or design goes live. It’s when you will be able to see and share your site with the world.
