5 Things You Can Do To Modernize Your Design

Trend changes in web design may not be as obvious as fashion trends but they do exist. Like fashion, you can pick and choose what works for you but here are a few things to consider if you want to give your site a quick refresh.

  1. Keep it clean. Remove anything that is not necessary: excess images, rambling text, excessive or poorly placed calls to action and pop-ups.

  1. Choose a color palette and stick with it. I hear you, you love color and your brand is festive and fun but too much of a good thing is just too much. Be strategic in how you incorporate color onto your site. Contrast is also critical and be conscious of how easy it is to read the text.

  2. Scale and Balance. Is your logo overpowering your header? Is your banner image so large that you have to scroll down to see it? Keep your first imprint above the fold balanced.

  3. Fonts. Just changing your font can make a huge difference. Large, bold fonts are currently on trend and I personally like a mix of serif and sans serif. Make sure the text is large enough to actually read and if you choose to incorporate color, be sparing and selective.

  4. Images that don't represent what you do. I recently did a re-design for the Architectural Foundation of SF. Their original home page (see below) had a HUGE logo, sparse background and an image of San Francisco that was cut off above the fold. At a glance you had no idea that this amazing organization was geared towards helping students learn design skills. We filled it with gorgeous high school students and their work. Yes, yes, yes!
